Activities U.S. employees undertake during the workday that decrease productivity.
Actions taken throughout the day affect overall productivity. These activities performed by U.S. employees, both in and out, of the office decrease productivity.
Lack of sleep
Sleep is vital to a worker's ability to perform tasks at a high level. With busy schedules, balancing work and personal life can be difficult €”and sleep is often sacrificed. Workers should get a full eight hours of sleep per night to be productive. A study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania reports that four to six hours of sleep per night for 2 weeks affects cognitive ability by as much as going three days without any sleep. Employees should sleep more to be more productive.
Errands
Working long hours tends to prevent employees from running errands. These overworked employees then take time out of the work day to go run their errands. Taking frequent breaks, to run errands, can decrease productivity.
Social Media
Using social media throughout the day can be distracting, and takes employee attention away from work. To be more productive stop using social media during work hours.
Meetings
Keep the meetings to a minimum. Unless the meeting is absolutely vital to a job function, meetings tend to drag and take time away from being productive. Skip unnecessary meetings to be more productive.
Emailing
While emailing is an important way to keep up business, it can often make employees less productive. When a worker has to stop what they're doing to send an email it redirects focus and the constantly switching tasks can decrease productivity. Employees should set aside time in their day for emails.
Music and Television
Listening to music or watching television during the work day may help employees enjoy the day, but they take time away from working. Cut out entertainment activities to make employees more productive.
