AN UNPRECEDENTED RELATIONSHIP!
As of 2014 the US Postal Service has teamed up with Amazon. The partnership is changing the USPS's practices. In its 240-year history, the USPS has never delivered on Sundays. However, in order to meet delivery demands, the postal service has started delivering seven days a week. And deliveries are becoming more varied. Letter carriers are now delivering groceries in major cities across the country.
This new relationship hasn't been so terrible for the USPS. According to Bloomberg Business, the USPS package delivery services increased by 8 percent and accounted for nearly one fifth of the Postal service's revenue.
However, the US Postal Service has had financial woes the past few years, and this partnership with Amazon isn't cheap. The postal service has older technology and practices that are outdated. In fact, many of the delivery vehicles are not designed to carry heavy package loads. Within the last year the USPS has had to invest in new equipment to work with Amazon. As of July 2015, the USPS projects a loss of 6.1 billion dollars for 2015.
Unlike privatized mail delivery services, the USPS is governed by the US government meaning its finances are controlled by Congress. The USPS relationship with Amazon, gives the privatized company a unique relationship with the US government via the commutative property.
Specifics of the deal with Amazon have been limited as the details of the contract have been largely confidential. However, Amazon isn't the only privatized company that has hired the USPS. The USPS has reported that it makes Sunday deliveries for other companies as well, but names have yet to be released.
