Here's what you need to know about the Angels' proposed move.
With their lease at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California set to end in 2020, the Los Angeles Angels are looking for a new Southern California home. Recently, the team has been in conversation with the city of Long Beach. But is the baseball franchise really set to move next year? Here's what you need to know.
While the move to Long Beach is not confirmed by city officials, it is so secret that the franchise has been communication with the city of Long Beach. The Angels are to decide whether to renew their lease at Angels Stadium and remain in Anaheim or move to a new ballpark along the Long Beach waterfront. According to a team spokesperson, the Angels hope to make their decision by the end of 2019.
However, the decision is not a clear-cut one. Currently, Angels stadium sits in an area of parking lots that offer approximately 100 acres of space for development. In Long Beach, the proposed site for the stadium is a 13-acre parking lot. However, the city of Long Beach recently approved negotiations for a larger parcel of land, encompassing the original 13-acre plot along with the city's convention center, performing arts center, arena, and a greenbelt between Shoreline Drive and the Pacific Ocean.
The city of Long Beach has since conducted a study of what the waterfront ballpark would cost, and estimates indicate that construction could reach above $1.1 billion. While the study introduced several financing options to consider, several require voter approval which experts note will be difficult to secure. Additionally, even if the Angels did decide to move to Long Beach, construction on their new stadium would not be complete until 2025.
