Written communication developed in ancient civilizations. However, the beginning of such writings were written on heavy clay, stone, wood, or wax. It wasn't until the Egyptians made papyrus, that the concept of paper took off. Written messages were then light enough to transport from place to place throughout the ancient world.
Trade.
Trade has long been a staple of the success of great societies. Access to trade often came with wealth. However, trade also brought an exchange of information. In fact, in early American history, mail was carried between places via merchants.
Pigeon Carriers.
It's not just people that have historically carried mail. Pigeons were often trained to carry messages across moderate distances. There are reports of the use of carrier pigeons in ancient times, but they played an integral part in European warfare. Specifically, during World War I, carrier pigeons helped deliver messages between battalions.
The Telegraph.
As technology advances, communication becomes faster. In the 19
th century comes the invention of the telegraph. People were now able to send and receive information more quickly than ever.
Airmail.
Airmail changed how mail was delivered across the world. No longer did you have to wait for it to cross oceans, but you could fly it to its destination, helping it arrive faster. The US implemented the practices in the early 20
th century.
