Interesting Facts About the Spring Equinox

Learn more about the Spring Equinox.

This year, the Spring Equinox fell on March 20th. Also known as the Vernal Equinox, this occasion marks the beginning of spring.   To celebrate this changing of seasons, here are some interesting facts about this annual event.
  1. The Spring Equinox coincides with the moment that the sun will be positioned directly above the equator. This happens twice a year during the Spring and Autumnal Equinoxes.
  2. In Latin, "Equinox" means "equal night." This refers to the fact that on the Equinox, day and night are of almost equal lengths.   Due to the angle of Earth, every region of the planet will experience close to 12 hours of daylight and 12 of darkness.
  3. The Spring Equinox marks the beginning of the Persian New Year. The New Year is ushered in with a 13-day celebration known as Nowruz.
  4. There is a myth that states that it's easier to balance an egg on its tip during the Equinox. However, this has been debunked by scientists €”the amount of sunlight we receive has nothing to do with gravitational pull.   If you are skilled enough, you can balance an egg on its tip every day of the year.
  5. While the Spring Equinox is traditionally celebrated as the first day of spring, climate scientists define the first day of the season differently. According to their meteorological calendar, which is based on temperature cycles, the first day of spring falls on March 1st.
