Over the last ten years, the residents of Irvine have seen a considerable increase in the city's traffic congestion.   Experts link this steady increase to the greater number of residents settling in the area, as well as the many new businesses and housing developments popping up all over the city. While the traffic problem is affecting residents throughout Irvine, the worst congestion is found on main streets, such as Jamboree Road, and the areas around the University of California, Irvine campus.   According to a 2016 survey administered by the city, more than 60% of residents reported that traffic congestion was a €œdaily annoyance € or a €œbig problem. € After years of suffering through gridlocked streets and seemingly unending bouts of stop-and-go traffic, it seems that city officials have finally had enough.   Recently, the city of Irvine invested $79 million in new projects to address the areas where traffic congestion is the worst. For instance, Mark Linsenmayer, the Director of Transportation for the City of Irvine, revealed that the city had plans for roadway expansion and signal light changes on busy streets such as Jamboree Road, Jeffery Road, and University Drive.   This is just one of the projects that are expected to improve traffic flow and increase mobility.   In addition to this project, the city also has plans to do the following:

• Widen a critical stretch of University Drive from MacArthur Boulevard to Campus Drive.
• Synchronize more than 200 traffic signals on all major streets, cutting the average drive time by 10-15%.
• Synchronize 40 Caltrans lights at ramps to the I-5 and I-405 and the 133 and 261 toll roads.
• Add several new traffic lights that allow left turns when blinking yellow
• Widen the intersection at Culver and University drives.
