February marks the beginning of Black History Month; a month dedicated to honoring the contributions of African Americans throughout American history. In honor of this month, learn more about Black History Month and the NAACP with these interesting facts.
1) In 1926, Carter G. Woodson (African American historian, scholar, educator, and publisher) established the week-long event that would later turn into Black History Month.
2) At first, Black History Month was not widely recognized, however after the growth of the civil rights movement in the 1960s, it became widely celebrated throughout America. It was the leaders of the Black United Students at Kent State University in Ohio that suggested that the week-long event should be extended to a month.
3) Black History Month was finally established in 1976 when President Gerald Ford officially recognized it as a federal, month-long celebration. It was chosen to be celebrated in February to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.
4) When it first began, Black History Month focused on a different theme every year. The themes were originally chosen by Carter G. Woodson to help direct public attention. He hoped to use the themes to bring attention to the issues being highlighted. This year, the theme of Black History Month is €œAfrican Americans in Times of War. €
5) The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) was formally established on February 12, 1909 as a result of the extreme racial violence of the time. February 12 was chosen to align with Abraham Lincoln's birthday.
