San Francisco's post offices have become a model for postal recycling practices.
With letters and packages flitting about the post office, there aren't many organic materials that pass through. While federal law states that mail carriers must deliver all of an individual's mail, the post office still has its fair share of waste. Most of the waste, however, is recyclable. San Francisco's postal offices are leading the pack in waste management.
After a 2014 audit, it was discovered that San Francisco post offices were some of the worst offenders when it comes to waste management. Of all the garbage that was sent to the landfill, the majority was recyclable. To make matters more complex, the city of San Francisco has €œZero Waste € efforts. By the year 2020, the city of San Francisco €œZero Waste € initiative strives to have zero waste enter a landfill. Instead, all waste will be sent to composting and recycling facilities.
San Francisco's postal services have since taken action and have become a model for postal recycling for the rest of the country. With the assistance of the Department of the Environment, all 31 of San Francisco's post office have cut down on their waste by 70 percent! Clear labeling, proper trash bins, and training for postal workers have all helped cut back on waste.
In addition to the environmental impacts, recycling has a fiscal impact. Increased recycling has saved more than $200,000 for the postal service.
