Thanksgiving is finally here! Celebrate America's favorite feast day with these fascinating facts about this holiday.
1) Benjamin Franklin wanted to name the turkey as America's national bird. In a letter to his daughter he claimed that eagles had €œbad moral character € while turkeys were a €œmuch more respectable bird. €
2) Only male turkeys, known as Toms, gobble. Female turkeys, or hens, cackle.
3) The largest turkey ever recorded weighed 86 pounds.
4) President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863. However, it was not Lincoln's idea. A newspaper editor named Sarah Josepha Hale was behind the campaign to make Thanksgiving an official holiday. However, this isn't Hale's only claim to fame; she also wrote the famous nursey rhyme €œMary Had a Little Lamb. €
5) The first Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade took place in 1924. The parade featured 400 employees who marched down the streets of New York City. The first Thanksgiving Day Parade didn't have the huge balloon floats that we know and love, but it did feature live animals from the Central Park Zoo.
6) The first Thanksgiving feast in 1621 didn't even have turkey on the menu. 50 Pilgrims ad 90 Wampanoag Indians most likely feasted on deer, venison, ducks, geese, oysters, lobster, eel, and fish. Pumpkins were also probably on the menu, just not in pie form.
7) The first Thanksgiving dinner wasn't eaten with forks. The first forks didn't reach the pilgrims until ten years after the first Thanksgiving, and they didn't become widely popular until the 18
th century.
8) Thanksgiving was almost a fast instead of a feast. The early settlers planned to give thanks for their first harvest by praying and abstaining from food. However, when the Wampanoag Indians joined the festivities, the fast became a three-day feast instead!
