Stay Cool This Summer with These Tips to Prevent Heat-Related Illness

Prevent heat-related illness this summer with these tips!

Summertime is here, and so are extreme temperatures. While a little sun makes for a great day at the beach or relaxing by the pool, too much heat can lead to heat-related illnesses. From heat stroke to heat rash, there are many ways that your body reacts adversely to the sun's intensity. Prevent heat-related illness, and check out these tips to stay cool.
  • Stay Hydrated. Drink plenty of water when you're out in the sun. Your body needs plenty of water to help keep itself cool. It's especially important to drink lots of hydrating fluids when you're exercising in the heat. Be prepared and drink water throughout the day.
  • Spend Time in the Shade. Too much time in the sun doesn't just increase your risk for a sunburn. It also increases your risk for a heat-related illness. If you're planning on spending time outside this summer, look for areas with lots of shade. It will help to cut the temperature a bit, which will allow your body to cool down a bit.
  • Avoid Spending Time Outside During Peak Hours. The sun is most intense between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. If you're planning on spending time outdoors, avoid going out during these hours if you can. Wait until it cools off before engaging in outdoor activities.
  • Take Breaks. Working outside in the hot sun is strenuous work. If you work outdoors, be vigilant of your health this summer. If you feel that the heat is overwhelming, take a short break. It will help your body to rest so that it can stabilize before your symptoms develop into something more serious.
  • Recognize the Symptoms of Heat-Related Illness. When it comes to heat-related illness, know the symptoms so that you can catch it early. Watch out for confusion, fainting, nausea, rapid heartbeat, hot skin, and excessive sweating.
