Learn about the newest developments regarding Irvine's OC Great Park.
While the development of Irvine's 688-acre sports park had been slow going for over a decade, progress began to speed up in 2017. Continuing this trend, major developments are expected to take place in 2019. For instance, many new features are scheduled to open up, including one of the largest public ice facilities in the country and a 40-acre natural area complete with trees, walking paths, and even a dog park.
According to Irvine City Manager, John Russo, the city is also looking to sign agreements that will bring a children's museum, water polo complex, indoor volleyball and basketball facility, and the return of the Wild Rivers water park to the complex. Russo also went on to report that he planned to introduce a proposal for a 260-acre cultural terrace located in the southeastern quadrant of the park. The plans for this new addition would feature several museums, a botanical garden, and an amphitheater.
While plans are not yet confirmed, there is a possibility of eating establishments being added throughout the complex. Additionally, Russo is awaiting verification on a proposed state veterans cemetery.
While there are still some uncertainties regarding the final plans for the park's development, it is very much on the way to becoming a world-class sport, recreation, and cultural center. With Irvine hoping to host some of the 2028 Los Angeles, Olympic events, the continued development of OC Great Park is something that the whole county can look forward to.
