What to Know About Memorial Day

What to know about this special day of remembrance.

While Memorial Day has passed, it's important to understand the history behind this holiday.   Here is what you should know about the history of this day of remembrance. Memorial Day was established to honor the brave men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.   This holiday has roots that trace all the way back to the Civil War when both the Union and Confederacy held special ceremonies to bury their dead and celebrate their sacrifice. Following the Civil War era, people continued to hold unofficial tributes to the fallen.   However, it would be many years before Memorial Day would be declared a national holiday.   It was only in 1950 that U.S. Congresses developed a resolution to observe Memorial Day.   In 1968, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was passed, which declared Memorial Day as the final Monday in May. Today, many people celebrate this holiday with outdoor parties, barbecues, and family vacations.   While having fun is encouraged, it's also important to remember that these luxuries are all thanks to the brave men and women who sacrificed themselves to protect our freedoms.   So, on this holiday, spare a moment to thank and honor those who have given themselves to their country.
